Our Startup: Banana Med\r\n\r\nBanana Med is a health-tech and sustainable manufacturing startup that produces biodegradable surgical sutures made from natural banana fibers. We are addressing two major challenges: (1) the high cost and limited availability of quality surgical sutures in low- and middle-income countries, and (2) the environmental impact of synthetic, non-degradable medical waste.\r\n\r\nOur Mission\r\nOur mission is to make surgeries safer, more affordable, and more sustainable by introducing an innovative alternative to traditional surgical threads. We aim to empower hospitals and healthcare providers—especially in underserved regions—by providing eco-friendly sutures that combine biocompatibility, strength, and affordability.\r\n\r\nWhat Makes Us Unique\r\n\r\nSustainability at the core: Unlike synthetic sutures made from petroleum-based materials, our sutures are derived from renewable banana tree fibers, reducing medical plastic waste.\r\n\r\nAffordability: Our solution is designed to be low-cost, making surgical supplies more accessible to healthcare systems in resource-limited settings.\r\n\r\nInnovation rooted in local resources: By leveraging agricultural byproducts (banana plants), we not only reduce waste but also create new value chains for farmers.\r\n\r\nValidation with experts: We are engaging with surgeons to test and refine prototypes, ensuring clinical relevance and safety from the ground up.\r\n\r\n\r\nVision\r\nWe envision a future where every hospital in emerging economies has access to high-quality, eco-friendly surgical sutures, reducing both surgical complications and environmental damage.
